Correspondence from Morley Roberts, 1876-1886.

The earliest letter is dated from Hyderabad and written over a period of several weeks, from December 1876 to January 1877, on board ship, during passage to Melbourne. The remaining letters are dated from June 1884 to April 1886, written from various localities in British Columbia, and from San Francisco. One letter from San Francisco is written on letterhead of the lodging house Rest for the Weary. The letter of 11 June 1884 appears to be a fragment (conclusion wanting), and is written on the verso of a fragment of a letter (the conclusion) from H. L. Hughes, apparently the same person mentioned in subsequent letters, at whose ranch Roberts was staying, in Kamloops, British Columbia. On the verso of the letter of 7 April 1885 is a draft of a poem entitled Ode to Manifold Nature, dated 3 April 1885 (not included in the typescript). The typescripts of these letters to his mother, along with typescripts made by Roberts of other letters that he wrote in the same time period (to his sisters, Marion and Ida; and to George Gissing), were apparently part of a single manuscript that Roberts prepared with a typed title page reading: Letters from abroad to various people (including Gissing) by M. R. (for title page, see Folder 115).
